The restoration studio of a London joinery house
Sash Restoration London repairs, restores and draught-proofs timber sash and casement windows in period and listed homes across central and north London. We are the restoration studio of The Barnsbury Group, a London heritage joinery house established in 1980, with more than forty years on the capital's sash windows.
What we are for
Most London sash windows do not need replacing. They need the paint and putty stripped back, the rot cut out and spliced, the cords and weights renewed, the beads replaced and the whole window rebalanced so it opens and closes easily and stays where you put it. We do it in Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian houses, in mansion flats and in listed terraces, and we do most of it from inside the room.
Where a window really is past saving, we say so at the survey. The replacement is then made to the original profile by Barnsbury Joinery, our group's manufacturing studio, and fitted by the same team you met at the survey.

How we work
Every job follows the same six steps: a free digital survey from your photographs, a written quotation itemised by window and by task, the overhaul, any upgrades fitted while the window is apart, finishing, and sign-off with you at every window.
Every job has a named point of contact. Dust sheets, floor protection and a tidy handover are standard. We sequence the windows room by room so the house stays usable.
Conservation
We work in Article 4 streets and listed buildings as a matter of course. Repair and draught-proofing rarely need consent. Double glazing and replacement sometimes do, and the answer varies by borough. We check at the survey whether an Article 4 direction or listing applies to your address. Where an application needs drawings, we can prepare them. That is separate work and we quote for it. For independent heritage advice, surveys and expert reports we refer to Heritage Window Consultants, the group's advisory practice.
The group
Sash Restoration London is one of five studios in The Barnsbury Group. Barnsbury Joinery, the flagship, makes bespoke sash windows, shutters, doors and panelling by hand in London and is specified by architects and estates including The Crown Estate and Grosvenor Estate. The regional restoration studios in Hertfordshire, Belfast and Australia work to the same standards.
The studio
Our restoration work happens on site, in your home. New sashes and components that have to be made rather than repaired are made at Barnsbury Joinery's London studio. Our London office is at Ripplevale Grove, Islington N1.
