Painting and finishing

A sash window fails through its paint first.

We prepare properly, back to sound paint or bare timber where needed, prime bare wood, fill, and hand-paint in a breathable system that lets the timber move. We paint windows we have restored and windows we haven't, inside and out.

What we do

  • Strip failed paint
  • Treat and prime bare timber
  • Fill and sand
  • Two coats hand-applied
  • Sashes painted with the window apart so no edge is missed and nothing is painted shut
  • Colour matching to existing or to a conservation palette

What it does not fix

If the survey finds soft timber, we recommend repair before painting and quote both.

Questions

Common questions

How often should sash windows be repainted?01

It depends on which way the window faces and how exposed it is; windows facing the weather or a busy road need painting more often. The time to act is when the paint first cracks along the bottom rail and cill, before water reaches the timber.

Can you paint without painting the windows shut?02

Yes. We paint the sashes with the window apart, so no edge is missed and nothing is painted shut, and refit them once the paint is dry.

Do you use heritage paint ranges?03

We use a breathable paint system that lets the timber move, and match colours to the existing finish or to a conservation palette. If you have a particular heritage colour in mind, tell us at the survey.
