Sash window repairs and restoration in Islington
Sash Restoration London is based in Islington, and the borough's Georgian and Victorian terraces are our home ground. We restore, repair and draught-proof timber sash windows across Islington, Highbury, Barnsbury, Canonbury, Angel, Clerkenwell, Archway and Holloway, working from inside wherever we can and to the council's conservation requirements as standard.

Islington's windows
Islington has some of London's finest late-Georgian and early-Victorian terraces: the squares of Barnsbury and Canonbury, the terraces off Upper Street, and the Georgian rows of Highbury Place and Highbury Terrace. The earlier houses have slender six-over-six sashes, now and then still glazed with old crown or cylinder glass, and many keep their folding shutters in the reveals. The later Victorian streets of Holloway and Archway have heavier two-over-two and one-over-one sashes with horns. Most of it is restorable; very little of it needs replacing.
What we do in Islington
Conservation in Islington
Islington Council has removed permitted development rights in 40 of its 42 conservation areas through Article 4 directions, and its own guidance says permission is needed where the work is on the front of the house, or the side if it is visible from the street. Our guide to conservation areas and Article 4 directions explains how it works. Check your own address on Islington Council's conservation area and Article 4 map, and we will go through what your windows need at the survey. Where an application does need drawings, we can prepare them. That is separate work and we quote for it.
Draught-proofing in Islington
Islington's Georgian sashes are tall, and tall sashes draught badly: the gap at the meeting rail runs the full width of the window, and a century of paint build-up and badly replaced beads has usually widened it. We rout brush seals into the existing sashes and fit a compression seal at the meeting rail and bottom rail. Nothing is visible when the window is closed, the sashes still run fully, and the work is done from inside. It carries a five-year guarantee, provided the seals have not been damaged by a third party, adjusted or tampered with.
Slimline double glazing in Islington
Islington's later Victorian sashes in Holloway, Archway and Highbury are usually deep enough to take a slim sealed unit, so the window can be double glazed without being replaced. The finer Georgian sashes around Barnsbury and Canonbury often are not: the stiles are too slender to carry the weight and the glazing bars too fine to take a unit. We check which you have at the survey. Where a Georgian sash cannot take a unit, secondary glazing or acoustic glass is the alternative.

Common questions
Where in Islington are you based?01
Ripplevale Grove, N1, so Barnsbury, Canonbury and Highbury are a short walk.
Can you repair the original crown glass in my Georgian sashes?02
We keep original glass wherever it is sound and source matching crown or cylinder glass where a pane has to be replaced.
Do you work on Islington's listed squares?03
Yes. Repair rarely needs consent; anything more does. Where an application needs drawings, we can prepare them. That is separate work and we quote for it.
